New rich material of the cervoid Pomelomeryx gracilis (Artiodactyla, Cervoidea) from the Lower Miocene of Europe (Agenian, MN2) is described in the context of the sedimentology, faunal composition and biochronology of the fossil site Rothenstein 10/14 (karstic fissure filling system, Germany, Bavaria). The studied material of P. gracilis comprises a skull and many dental remains, which are an essential contribution to our knowledge about skull morphology and intraspecific variability in dentition and are used to frame a new definition of the species among contemporaneous cervoids. The discovery of two lacrimal foramina in its rostral orbital rim brings a new perspective into the discussion of its systematic position. Depending on that character being apomorphic or not for cervids, P. gracilis might be very closely related with the Cervidae or remain a member of the Moschidae as proposed before. For the time being the latter interpretation is maintained. A lectotype and a paralectotype of P. gracilis are established.
