First record of Lagurus lagurus (Pallas, 1773) (Mammalia, Rodentia, Arvicolidae) from the Late Pleistocene of North Germany. Molars from a fragmentary mandible which was recently recovered from fluviatil-limnic deposits exposed in a sand pit at Zachow near Ketzin (Brandenburg), North Germany, are briefly described and assigned to Lagurus lagurus. In addition to Lagurus lagurus, the following mammalian species are represented: Mammuthus primigenius, Bison/Bos sp., Arvicola cf. terrestris, and Microtus oeconomus. Remains of Esox lucius and cyprinid fishes, as well as molluscs, ostracods and charophytes were also found. The associated molluscan fauna refers the Lagurus-bearing deposit of Zachow to an Early Weichselian interstadial, but the precise age requires further study. The specimen from Zachow provides the first evidence for the expansion of Lagurus lagurus into North Germany during the Late Pleistocene and represents the northernmost record for this species in central Europe. It reflects an early Weichselian immigration of Lagurus lagurus from the East to the Central Europe and is interpreted as an indication of continental climatic conditions at this time. A brief review of the German sites with Lagurus lagurus is given.
