Research of ownership marks in preserved libraries from both private and institutional book collections is a long-term process. It requires deep historical, cultural, ecclesiastical and literary knowledge to make it possible to reconstruct the given libraries. The article draws attention to research problems encountered in the reconstruction of historical libraries, the methodology of the research of ownership and provenance marks, especially based on extant handwritten catalogues or lists of books in probate inventories. The next part presents rare Humanist libraries of the 16th and 17th centuries that existed in Slovakia and played an important role in the historical process of Hungary in the cultural, ecclesiastical and political life of the land. They include for instance the libraries of Johannes Dernschwam, Johannes Sambucus, Zacharias Mossovius, Georgius Turzo, Melchior Krupek and others. The concluding part of the article states that reconstructions of earlier book collections are essential research projects within the history of book culture not only in Slovakia but also in the entire Central European area.
