The stone martens, Martes foina (Erxleben, 1777) inhabits a variety of habitat types, including agricultural landscape, rock cliffs, suburban and urban areas. The species has found very suitable conditions (e.g. shelters and breeding places, good food sources, absence of predators) also in towns. This pilot study presents first data on the distribution and habitat preferences of one urban population of stone marten in the Czech Republic. Of the total of 245 mapping squares (31 km2), occurrence of the species was found in 147 squares, based on 197 records. Stone martens were recorded in all types of habitats, with negative correlation with open unbuilt area, slab block and forest patches.
