The paper gives basic information on the occurrence of small mammals in the southern parts of the Českomoravská vrchovina Highlands. The study area of about 5,000 km2 is roughly defined as a territory situated between the D1 highway (Praha–Brno) in the north, and the Czech-Austrian border in the south. Besides the results of the intensive field work performed mostly in the period 2001–2004, this paper summarises also other available unpublished records, data from museum collections and literature sources. Reviews of all registered findings (nearly 3,900 records) accompanied by complete data on the circumstances of the new (so far unpublished) findings are given. The circumstances of their recent or historical occurrence are discussed, and in the selected species, a distribution pattern is presented in the grid maps. In total, 47 small mammal species have been recorded (79.6% of the small mammal species of the Czech Republic), and nearly two thirds of them (precisely 28) are widespread in the study region (including Neomys anomalus, Microtus agrestis, Micromys minutus, Myotis mystacinus, M. daubentonii, Barbastella barbastellus, Plecotus auritus, Plecotus austriacus etc.), however, the occurrence of some species is apparently mosaic and irregular (e.g. Myotis nattereri, Nyctalus noctula, Eptesicus nilssonii, Pipistrellus pipistrellus, Vespertilio murinus). Myotis bechsteinii, Nyctalus leisleri, Pipistrellus nathusii and P. pygmaeus are less common dendrophilous species and further data are required to be able to interpret their actual distribution in the area under study. On the other hand, in certain species (mainly thermophilic) only limited area of distribution covering mainly southern (south-eastern, resp.) parts of the study region has been found (e.g. Crocidura leucodon, Rhinolophus hipposideros, Myotis myotis, M. emarginatus etc.). Two species (Rattus rattus and Eliomys quercinus) were reported only from the past. In general, certain gradients of the regional species diversity can be noted in the directions both from the north to the south, and from the west to the east, as well. Our results concerning small mammals have confirmed the opinion that the southern part of the Českomoravská vrchovina Highlands represents a region of high bio-geographical importance due to its position on the boundary between the European deciduous forests province (Hercynia) and the European steppe province (Pannonia).
