A national otter protection programme in Slovakia will be developed using the results of a long-term project which involves otter surveys, monitoring and conservation. Shelters of the otter were carried out by observation in fresh water habitats central part of Slovakia in 1988–1999. We found 138 otter shelters, 49 (35.5%) of which were sub-surface and 89 (64.5%) surface. Altogether 138 resting-sites (holts, dens) have been found in various habitats. The results of this study indicate the importance of tree, shrub and tall-herb/tall-grass canopies of the riparian vegetation.
