The study compares theoretical approaches of provenance research in book culture history with the author’ experience acquired in the treatment of the historical book collection in the Central Library of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. Book archaeology has provided results in the form of the reconstruction of book collections and confronted the discipline with the question of the demythologised function of the book in cultural history, where the book is not only a medium but also an object of collecting. The study indicates the pitfalls of research in current institutional frameworks. On several examples, it explains not only the limitations but also the as-yet unused culturalanthropological potential of the provenance knowledge application. It sees the future of provenance research in the use of information technologies, in the interdisciplinary and methodological co-existence with other historical disciplines.
