Mácha’s literary work is highly musical, and he himself was deemed musical to his contemporaries. This paper studies the reception of Mácha’s opus in Czech music of the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly compositions upon the 100th anniversary of the poet’s death in 1936, but also inscenations of Mácha’s work, cinema rendition of his May and Thee Gypsies, and works pertaining to Mácha’s person.
