Dental calculus preserves information about past populations. This text aims to present the basic approaches to the rapidly developing research on this unique material and to provide recommendations for the analysis of dental calculus in archaeology, with a focus on obtaining the maximum amount of information. Optimal methodology involves a progression from non-destructive descriptive and some microscopic techniques to methods from molecular biology, biochemistry and organic chemistry that target biologically significant molecules such as ancient DNA and proteins. This can provide insights into, for example, diet, human microbiome, health, habits, contact or migration.
