Machulka's hunting diaries and travel journals constitute important and still not fully appreciated historical sources, contributing to expanding researchers' knowledge of non-European cultures. The diaries reveal the distinctive characteristics of Machulka's personality, his dispositions, and the focus of his interests: Machulka may be regarded as an explorer, hunter, ethnographer, zoologist, and botanist. Historians and sociologists value his personal observations, descriptions of his everyday duties and tasks. The first volume of Machulka's diaries includes two incomplete travel journals (one from 1903, describing a journey to Madagascar, stopping short of his stay there, and one from 1904, recording Machulka's journey from Colombo in Sri Lanka, through India, to Basra, Iraq), and hunting diaries from expeditions made in 1908, 1911, 1912, 1913, 1914 and 1925.
